Nonsurgical skin tightening after weight loss is a popular treatment for individuals who have successfully lost weight and now struggle with loose, deflated skin. These treatments are especially beneficial for patients who have lost significant weight through GLP-1 medications, as this rapid shed of fat can result in greater skin laxity. (1) These treatments stimulate collagen production in deep skin layers.

Dr. Gordon Andan is a board-certified cosmetic surgeon who leads New York City Surgical Arts with attention to detail, an artistic eye, and a focus on delivering natural-looking results. He and his staff utilize the most cutting-edge, technologically advanced skin-tightening procedures to help each patient effectively resolve their concerns. About Nonsurgical Skin Tightening

Significant weight loss is a major achievement and something to be proud of, especially for the way it transforms your health, mobility, and confidence. However, as you shed weight, you may notice lax skin. This is normal after losing a large amount of weight, particularly when the process happens quickly. Skin laxity can be present anywhere the body held fat, most notably in the abdomen, arms, thighs, neck, and even the face, creating discomfort and making it difficult to enjoy your weight transformation. Although surgery has been the primary option for skin removal, nonsurgical treatments present effective alternatives that do not require as much downtime.

Nonsurgical skin tightening treatments use advanced energy-based technologies to stimulate collagen and elastin production within the skin. (2) These structural proteins give skin its firmness and elasticity, but levels naturally decline with age or when the skin stretches to a point of no return. These treatments primarily work by stimulating the body’s natural healing responses with thermal energy and micro-injuries. By addressing these changes after rapid weight loss, nonsurgical skin tightening treatments can help patients enjoy their results more confidently.

RF Microneedling

RF microneedling is one of the most advanced nonsurgical skin tightening treatments available. This treatment increases collagen production to produce youthful-looking skin on the face, neck, and body. It combines microneedling with radiofrequency and LED light therapy to deliver a one-of-a-kind anti-aging experience with little downtime. (3)

The microneedling device uses ultra-fine needles to create precise micro-injuries in the skin. This triggers the body’s natural healing response, which enables it to increase its elastin and collagen production. At the same time, RF energy is delivered deep into the skin to heat and tighten the tissue. Additionally, it utilizes LED light therapy to enhance the healing process and reduce inflammation. RF microneedling is highly customizable and allows Dr. Andan and his team to tailor treatment depth and energy levels to your unique skin type and treatment needs.

Benefits

After losing weight, nonsurgical skin-tightening treatments become incredibly beneficial. Under Dr. Andan’s care, patients can:

  • Firm and tighten loose skin
  • Improve skin texture and tone
  • Stimulate collagen and elastin production
  • Easily include other noninvasive treatments
  • Achieve significant improvements with minimal downtime
  • Reach their personal weight loss and physique enhancement finish lines

Candidates

If you are struggling with loose skin after losing weight, you can benefit from an RF microneedling skin tightening treatment. Several factors determine your candidacy for this treatment, but most importantly, you must first be at a stable, maintainable goal weight for 6-12 months, as any future fluctuations can compromise your treatment outcomes. You should also be in good general health and hold realistic expectations for achievable outcomes. Because these treatments gradually stimulate cell activity, you must also be patient for results to manifest and be willing to prolong your results with a healthy lifestyle. During your consultation, Dr. Andan will determine if nonsurgical skin tightening is right for you or if surgical methods will be more effective.

Personal Consultation

At your personal consultation, Dr. Andan will first review your medical history and discuss your weight loss journey. He will also examine your skin laxity, specifically its location and its severity. With this information, he will determine if nonsurgical tightening treatments will be effective, or if you will require surgery. This meeting is your opportunity to learn more about how RF microneedling works and what to expect during the procedure. After a comprehensive conversation, Dr. Andan will outline your personalized treatment plan. This will include the total treatment cost, how many sessions you may need, how treatment will resolve your concerns, and more. Contact us online or call our office at (516) 746-0155 to schedule your personal consultation.

Preparation

Dr. Andan will provide detailed instructions to help you effectively prepare for your nonsurgical skin tightening treatment. Each patient’s instructions may vary slightly depending on their concerns and medical history, but in general, he advises:

  • Avoiding direct sun exposure and tanning for at least one week prior to treatment
  • Discontinuing the use of retinoids or harsh exfoliants
  • Arriving with a clean face free of skincare products or makeup

Procedure

At the start of your procedure, Dr. Andan will clean the treatment area and apply a topical numbing cream to reduce any discomfort. He will then set the microneedling device to the designated energy level and treatment depth for your procedure. With controlled movements, he will pass the RF microneedling handpiece over the target areas. The microneedles will gently puncture the skin, while the RF energy penetrates deep into the dermis to stimulate tightening and collagen production. These processes work in tandem; microneedling stimulates healing responses, and RF energy prompts the cells to enter growth phases. Additionally, the microneedling device will emit red and blue LED lights. Red lights work with the RF energy to help the skin heal, while blue lights kill bacteria. After addressing the target areas, Dr. Andan will apply a soothing mask. The microchannels created by microneedling allow these beneficial compounds to reach your deep tissues, further aiding skin tightening and rejuvenation. On average, each session lasts 30 to 60 minutes, depending on treatment goals and degree of skin laxity.

Recovery

Immediately after your procedure, you may experience mild redness, swelling, or pinpoint marks in the treated areas. These effects are normal and typically subside after a couple of days. Most patients are able to resume normal activities immediately, although it is important to follow any post-treatment care instructions Dr. Andan may provide. As your skin heals, you must avoid harsh skincare products, avoid direct sun exposure, and use a high-quality moisturizer and sunscreen.

Results

Tighter skin often becomes visible a few weeks after treatment as the skin begins to contract and new collagen forms. However, the most significant results will appear after several months as collagen continues to build. Eventually, you will notice smoother and firmer skin that tightly contracts to your new, lean physique.

Corresponding Procedures

RF microneedling is highly effective, but it may not be the only option to address loose skin after weight loss. Dermal fillers can restore volume in specific areas where fat loss has created a hollow appearance, medical-grade skincare can improve texture and hydration, and post-weight-loss surgical body contouring can be ideal if you are struggling with severe skin laxity that cannot be corrected with nonsurgical treatments.
